Backwater Valve Grant Program:

Backwater Valve Grant Program is administered by the Cohoes Local Development Corporation (CLDC) and is 75% funded up to $1,000 per project with a 25% match from homeowner. Total funding available for this program is $30,000 and will be determined on a first come first serve basis. This program is available to the owner of any single family and two family dwellings, owner occupied, in the City of Cohoes where a backup of combined sewage due to sewer incapacity on the municipal system occurred since 2002.

American Housing Corporation (AHC) Water Relief Program:

The City of Cohoes has a total program allowance of $100,000 for the purpose of assisting low/mod income homeowners to repair damages sustained in the extreme rain occurrences of July 1st thru July 30th.

This is a 60/40 grant program where the funding will cover up to 60% of the cost of the repairs and the owner will be responsible for 40%. In order to provide funding to as many households as possible the maximum project will be $5,000 with up to a $3,000 reimbursement. As part of the program, all units will be inspected for mold infestation.

Items such as furniture and electronics cannot be covered according to program guidelines. Additional guidelines are: home must be located in Cohoes; households income must be at or below 80% of the area median income as dicated by HUD; applicant must occupy and own the residence in need of rehabilitation (deed must be in the applicant's name); and mortgage, taxes, and homeowner insurance must be current.

Mold Remediation & Preventing the Growth of Mold
Click here for more Information on What to Do After a Flood provided by New York State Department of Health.

  • Moisture that enters buildings from leaks or flooding accelerates mold growth. Molds can cause disease, trigger allergic reactions and continue to damage materials after the storm.
  • Remove standing water from your home or office. Remove wet materials promptly and ventilate; use fans and dehumidifiers if possible.
  • If mold growth has already occurred, it is best to have a professional remove it.
  • Individuals with known mold allergies or asthma should never clean or remove mold.
  • Be careful about mixing household cleaners and disinfectants, as combining certain types of products can produce toxic fumes and result in injury or death.
