The Cohoes city Court has jurisdiction over traffic matters, criminal matters, civil matters, summary proceedings and small claims actions. The Court hears traffic tickets - both violations and misdemeanors, including Driving While Intoxicated cases. Along with traffic matters, the Court also presides over criminal matters that take place within the City such as petit larceny. The Court also hears evictions brought by landlords; small claims brought by individuals who feel they are owed monies; and commercial claims by a corporation, partnership or association against individuals for monetary damages and civil actions where the amount sought does not exceed $15,000.00.
The Court has two City Court Justices which preside over all Court proceedings. The Justices are the Honorable Stephen VanUllen and the Honorable Richard Maguire. The Court office is charged with collecting the fines imposed by the Judges on various cases. The Court also maintains records of all cases brought before the Court.
Location And Directions
The Cohoes city Court is located in Room #7, Cohoes City Hall at 97 Mohawk Street at the intersection of Ontario and Mohawk Streets. City Hall is two blocks west of 787 North, with easy access from the NYS Thruway and Route 87 (the Northway). to locate City Hall from Route 9 North, take 9R exit which becomes Route 470 (Ontario Street). Alternatively, to locate city Hall from 87, take exit 7 to Cohoes 9R and 470. City Hall is also on a CDTA bus route.

Court Dates:
The following dates are scheduled if they do not occur on a Holiday or the day immediately following a Holiday.
Criminal, Non-Criminal (City Violations):
Every Tuesday, commencing at 6:00 P.M.
Criminal matters including Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of motor vehicle (unclassified misdemeanor) for arraignment only on Tues. Prosecuted by ADA Rebecca Bauscher.
Non-criminal matters prosecuted by the Corporation Counsel, Greg Teresi at (518) 233-2114.
Traffic:
Every Wednesday, commencing at 8:30 A.M.
All infractions prosecuted by Corporation Counsel, Greg Teresi; misdemeanors are prosecuted by ADA Rebecca Bauscher and will be arraigned on a Tuesday and given a return date for a Thursday.
Civil:
Every Monday commencing at 9:00 A.M.
Every Wednesday commencing at 10:00 A.M.
Small Claims Court – May sue for money only, up to $5,000, without an attorney.
Small Claims Court – May sue for money only, up to $15,000, with an attorney.
Commercial Claims Court – May sue corporations, partnerships and associations or money only, up to $1,500 without an attorney.
Landlord/Tenant Evictions – May be filed with or without an attorney. However, if you are a LLC an attorney must appear with you or on your behalf on the return Court date.
Filings and fine payments are accepted Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 8:30 and 3:00. Filings are accepted Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 11:00 and fine payments are accepted from 8:30 to 3:00.
