BREAST CANCER & DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Research shows that this year alone, more than 211,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 will die.  It is said that one woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.  Breast cancer not only affects women but men as well, over 1, 600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year.  If detected early, the five year survival rate exceeds 95%.  Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram.

GETTING INVOLVED

On October 7, 2006 team "Cohoes" will join more than 1 million participants worldwide to make a difference.  You can either run, walk, get involved or get inspired.  The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series helps raise awareness of the importance of a positive health program - annual mammography beginning at age 40, clinical breast exams at least every three years beginning at age 20 and annually at age 40, and monthly breast self-examinations for all women beginning by age 20.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARNESS MONTH

Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or who are dating. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.  In President Bush's Proclamation on Domestic Violence Awareness Month he stated:

"Domestic Violence  is a great evil and an offense against human dignity that shatters lives and robs children of their innocence.  Where it occurs, homes are transformed into places of danger and despair.  According to the 2000 National Crime Victimization Survey, almost 700,000 Incidents of violence between partners were documented in our Nation, and thousands more go unreported.  And in the past quarter century, almost 57,000 Americans were murdered by a partner.  Children who witness domestic violence often grow up believing that physical cruelty in relationships is acceptable behavior, and thus they may tend to perpetuate a cycle of violence in society."

STOP VIOLENCE IN THE HOME     Donate A Phone, Save A Life.

One way to get involved is by donating your cell phone or other electronic devices. You can drop your cell phone or other electronic devices at City Hall in the Human Services Department or you can send it in to http://www.ncadv.org/files/BodyShop-NCADVPre-paidLabel.pdf.
