City of Cohoes to Allow 2018 Property Tax Prepayment

Cohoes, N.Y.-  In an effort to ease the tax burden imposed under the new tax laws, the City of Cohoes will accept 2018 property tax payments in 2017.  Mayor Morse said, “We have worked diligently in the past few days to ensure we can provide every opportunity for our taxpayers to save money. My goal has been and always will be to find ways to help reduce the tax liabilities on the hard working middle-class families of our community.”

The City of Cohoes Treasurer’s Office will collect City and County property taxes this week ONLY as a way of reducing the cost associated with the new 2018 tax laws that limit many of the deductions we all depend on.  Payments made via mail must be postmarked by Saturday, December 30, 2017 until 11:59pm to be considered timely. Payments can also be made in person at the Treasurer’s Office until Friday, December 29, 2017 between 9:00am and 4:00pm.  We unfortunately cannot accept online payments due to the administrative barriers opposed by this process.

TO OBTAIN THE AMOUNT OF YOUR TAX BILL, e-mail, call (518) 233-2111, or come into the Treasurer’s office in City Hall. If payments are made through an escrow account, please contact your Mortgage Company and/or bank for further information on how this will affect your account and payments.

Please note, the Treasurer’s Office makes no determination regarding the tax deductibility of pre-payment of property taxes.  Contact your accountant, attorney or the IRS for more information regarding this matter.

“This is a prime example of the unwavering commitment from Mayor Morse and his desire to help our community. To create this opportunity in such a short period and over a holiday season is exceptional and I commend the Mayor and his staff,” states Common Council President Chris Briggs.

Own a rental property?  The City of Cohoes requires residential occupancy permits (ROPs) every three years or with every change in tenancy.  Inspection of each rental unit costs $40.
Contact the Treasurer’s Office at 233-2111 to schedule your inspection.

The primary function of the Treasurer's Office is billing and collecting City, County as well as water/sewer utility bills. The office is the custodian of all tax records, handling all inquiries, and tax searches.

All fees such as permits for building, plumbing, residential occupancy, and trash pick-up are payable to the "City of Cohoes," at the Treasurer's Office.

Additionally, the Treasurer's Office serves as the Parking Violations Bureau, collecting and maintaining all parking tickets.

2017 Cohoes City Taxes, County Taxes, and Water/Sewer Bills will be mailed out at the end of February and are due without penalty by March 31, 2017.  Payments can be made online, at Pioneer Bank (Waterford Branch only) or via mail.  If you are paying online, your Section, Block, and Lot Number (SBL) is required.  This number is located on your bill or can be obtained online via the Assessor Department - Final Assessment Roll.  If you have any questions, please contact the Treasurer's office at (518) 233-2111.

Effective January 31, 2017, the Treasurer's Office will no longer be accepting 2016 Water/Sewer payments.  Any unpaid amounts will be relevied on the 2016 City tax bill payable in two equal installments. If you have an escrow paying your taxes, this may increase your regular monthly payment.
