Bridge Avenue Bridge Reconstruction
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

Bridge Avenue Bridge is now open as the majority of the bridge construction is complete. Although the project is not final, the City of Cohoes has chosen to open this route particularly for local traffic in order to allow relief to motorists and pedestrians who have been impacted by this project. Work is still being conducted as it relates to the Bridge Avenue Bridge project and therefore there may be temporary traffic interruptions.

"With the beginning of the new school year just around the corner, I felt it imperative to open Bridge Avenue Bridge as soon as possible in order to relieve the traffic and pedestrian concerns that residents have endured patiently this last year,” said Mayor John T. McDonald III.

Additionally, the City has closed access on Van Schaick Avenue between Park and Continental Avenue to thru traffic as was recommended by a majority of the community during the Van Schaick Island Land Use and Transportation Study completed in 2008. With the new turning lane added at Ontario Street and Cohoes Boulevard as a result of the bridge replacement project, motorists are now encouraged to use this route, also known as Route 470 Corridor, as their main source of travel when accessing Cohoes Boulevard.

“With the addition of a new turning lane plus implementation of the closing of Van Schaick Avenue, we hope to encourage all traffic east of the 112th Street Bridge to access Cohoes Boulevard and in turn I-787 thru Ontario Street which today, as opposed to when this project started, is a much more efficient intersection. Although the project was scheduled to have an opening in the late fall, I am pleased that we can provide this option at this time due in part to the great work by the contractor and all parties involved,” said Mayor McDonald.
