  • Tune into the news. When a snow emergency is declared all media outlets are notified as well as a posting on the City website with specific directions being given.

  • Snow emergencies generally run for 48 hour periods. Initially DPW crews focus on clearing the main streets, and proceed onto secondary streets. Odd/even parking is required to allow the snow to be pushed back as far as possible on both sides of the street.

  • Please avoid throwing snow back into the streets. We realize it is difficult to find places to put the snow, but placing snow back into the street creates significant public safety issues and is against the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1219 and City Code Section 244-14.

  • Please help us with the fire hydrants. If you have a fire hydrant on your property, we would greatly appreciate your support in clearing the area in case of an emergency. Our DPW crews and Fire Department will also attempt to clear fire hydrants.

  • Keep those sidewalks clean. As addressed in Section 244 of the City Code, the property owner is responsible for maintenance of the sidewalks. Snow and ice shall be removed within 24 hours after the end of the snowfall or within four hours after notice by the Commissioner of the Office of General Service. In instances of non-compliance, the City has the right to clear the sidewalk and bill the property owner.
